1970 F250, want to swap to 5 lug disc brakes?

Post by farmall1 »

Hey Guys, this is my first post here. Thanks for having me. I am interested in buying a 1970 F250 longbed standard cab 2WD, 360 FE and 4 seed with granny gear. One of the things I would want to change is the ride quality, disc brakes and the ability to buy some 5 lug wheels. This truck does have power brakes. I understand that some of the Crown Vic components MIGHT fit this truck as far as suspension but not sure about that. Can anyone tell me what items will swap so I can see what it would cost me to do this conversion? I did a little searching around but could not find a thread directly related to the F250. Many thanks in advance.

Are you going to use this truck to haul things or is it just a cruiser? If you aren't really looking for the load capacity why not just keep looking for a half ton? :2cents:
I believe the frames on all our trucks are 34" wide so the Crown Vic swap would work on any truck of this vintage. Check the 1970 body builders layout book here. http://www.fordification.com/tech/bodybuilder70.htm
Have you ever seen this page? http://www.fordification.com/index.htm Sometimes it doesn't come up in searches just the questions in the forums do. There's a LOT of information there that will help you out.
I hope this information helps.

Ditto, if your looking for a cruiser and you want 5-lug wheels then look for a half ton instead of trying to convert a 3/4 ton truck to a 1/2 ton, thats four steps backwards. :2cents:

Good points guys. The only reason I am considering this purchase and swap is because I like the truck. I helped my son after he bought it from the original owner and helped him bring it back to life. Also, I feel that he might want it back one day. If I buy it, I can enjoy it and ten sell it back to him if he wants it one day. I just want to put some different wheels on it and the selection of 8 lug wheels is pretty slim. I really like the patina of this truck. It is very solid with original paint.

The second link seems to take me to the discussion forum index. Do you know where I can find info regarding which vehicle I can get the parts from? Is there a certain year range of Crown Vic that I should look for? I also see some folks talking about mustang II. Is there a preference among these 2? Are there pros and cons?

Sentimental value I understand. I'll check my links tomorrow when I have access to my desktop. Like I said the Crown Vic should be a bolt up. If you look at the project updates forum you'll see several that have been done or are in process. I'm fairly certain that your truck will be the same as a half ton. The Mustang II style is usually a kit of some sort though I suppose you could track down the parts yourself. You want the later Crown Vic, I think it's 03 and newer. An old cop car is the favorite of many.

Thanks for the info guys. My son has decided to keep the truck. I am going to look at a 69 f100 shortbed, 2wd tomorrow with 390 and c6.

I think that this truck will make a much better starting platform for what you want to do than the F250 would have.
