3 Speed to a 4 or 5 speed

Post by jmc1975 »

Hey everyone, I'm sure this is an old question but, I have a 1970 F100 with a 300 inline 6 and I'm looking to put in a 4 speed or a 5 speed trans. I have 3 speed in it now. What is the best 4 or 5 speed trans to put in with little to no modifications? The engine block is a 1994 300.

If you're willing to change to a hydraulic clutch you can use the Mazda M2R5 I think it is. I'm sorry I don't remember the number but it came stock on trucks the same era as your motor. I have one in my '93 and haven't had any problems.

That's the one, these 12 hour graveyard shifts are gonna kill me. I'd bet you could do this for about half of your budget, and that would probably buy the entire truck.

The M5 trans is the one that would have been behind that engine from the factory.

The 'best' trans is somewhat subjective, but the strongest stock 5 speed was the ZF5, they are tougher to find as they only came in the F250's with 5.8 or 300-6 motors, but they are around.

i've seen them on craigslist for under $400 or take your chances at a junkyard. The junkyard ones i've seen have all been in base model (think fleet trucks) f250 2x4's... they have all been white with base interior. I've only seen 2 of them.

both transmissions will require modification to mount a hydraulic master cylinder on the firewall. HIO silver has a good post elsewhere showing that you can use the stock bellhousing and mechanical clutch with the TKO, but i think the '94 motor won't have a perch for the mechanical clutch mechanisim.

I believe there is a company that makes a bracket that will bolt onto the bellhousing bolts or oil pan bolts and allow the clutch mechanism to connect up. I know I saw it somewhere, just can't remember where.

Here's my thread on the TKO swap:

A quick Google search and I found this on a Mustang Forum. Something like this might work.

We put one in a 1969 f100 2wd out of a 1990 model f150 with same in line six. had to relocate the hanger bearing bracket ,actually made a new one, had to have drive line cut and rebalanced, installed new clutch etc. Heres the total: $200 for trans, drive shaft, slave cylinder, bell housing and cross member from local yard. $ 300 for the drive line cut balanced, new joints , carrier brg. etc. All total out of pocket was about $ 650 plus our labor. I can send pics if needed , we posted some of the build pics in a thread call " calling all pre-runners" Most difficult part of the whole thing was the slave cylinder clutch pedal mounting and that was not too bad.
