hot diff
For peace of mind, is it normal for my rear diff to be hot after a 30 min drive? The reason I ask is because I put in a new seal and crush sleeve.10 inch pounds torque.I checked it for leaks after a drive in 98 degree weather and dang it was hot.could only hold my hand on it a few seconds.its a 2 wheel Dr with 9 inch.

First off, I am certainly no expert on differentials but since no one else has chimed in.....
I do not think that it should be that hot, .... but I have never checked one either.

Drive down a bumpy road for 30 minutes and I can guarantee that if your shocks are working correctly you will not be able to hold your hand on them for any length of time
6 gears meshing with each other and 6 bearings generate a fair amount of heat
Not to mention taking some heat thru transfer from the brakes

Re: hot diff
The ZF5 that I recently put in my truck runs ~165* after a good highway run unloaded using it hard it will be closer to 190*.
I have a hand held IR thermometer I keep in the truck and on road trips I check the temp of the moving parts like wheel bearings,U joints gear boxes and the like if something starts to run hotter than normal I know there is something about to go wrong. It can tell you things you cant see difs will run around 150/160 unless you are really working the truck then they can reach 190/200

Re: hot diff
.. and on a 98° day the axle is also exposed convected heat from the hot asphalt which can be upwards of 125°
Heat is also caused by friction.... after replacing the pinion bearing, did you set the tooth pattern and pre-load?
Fill up the gear oil til it dribbled out of the fill port?

ok I feel better assuming that 160 degrees would be very hot on my hand. I would like to add one of those ir thermos to my tool box. Whats a decent brand without breaking the bank? also to Hio , I just replaced a leaking seal. Not the bearing. sucked out old oil and refilled with oriellys house brand 80w 90.

Re: hot diff
I bought the mid priced one from HF for keeping in the truck checked it's calibration on a pot of boiling water,I use it more to see if something is different from other things i check than knowing the exact temp. Think I paid ~$20.00 for it has already paid for it's self on a recent trip had a trailer wheel bearing running much hotter that the other side when checked at a rest stop so got out the jack and tool box re-packed it finished the trip and then replaced both sides when we got home could have been a real PITA if not caught when it was.blumule wrote:ok I feel better assuming that 160 degrees would be very hot on my hand.
