Well I broke a front wheel stud on my 72 f100 4x4. And I attempted to remove the front drum.
This drum is clearly from factory and the rim has completely rusted away. Looking at the new studs it looks like the drum as well as hub are press fitted to the studs. I've tried excessive penitrating oil, little sledge, air chisel and even big sledge hammer to get this sucker off. Still no luck.
Torch not required. I beat the H out of old lugnuts, tho. (Better than destroying the *good* wheelstuds!) You'll probably need a press to get them back in -- I rented a balljoint press. Perhap you have access to the same, or similar? I already had replacement drums; they were beyond turning.
Might as well repack the wheel bearings while you're in there, right?....
Well the job has been complete for a while. This is the trick. Apply penetrating oil liberally and let soak for a day or so. Use junk lug nut and drive each lug back out with mini sledge just an 1/8 to 1/4 inch (watch out for drum brake innerds). Apply map gas to flats between lugs on brake drum. Give the drum a little tap and it practically falls off.
I know I have had to use a sledge hammer and just beat them. Sometimes you save em if they are locked sometimes they break off. if you have the adjusters backed off all the way, it cant be hitting the ridge. Go for it.
