Brake Caliper Rattle. Arrrrrrgggghhhh
Hello everybody.
Thanks to the help from this forum I was able to find the right place to sort out my seriously positive camber issues. It's all sorted as is the king pins. Yaaaaaaaa. So much better. However, I'm left with a very rattely brake caliper on the front drivers side of my 1971 f-250.
Could really use some help with ways to shut the damn thing up. Only rattles when going over bumps on otherwise smooth road but makes enough of a noise to be heard over the engine.
Now I know packing it with grease is one option but will certainly attract a lot of dirt. anyone had the same problem and fixed it?
Thanks.

Re: Brake Caliper Rattle. Arrrrrrgggghhhh
What exactly is rattling? Is the caliper loose on the mount or are the pads rattling? Is this the kind of caliper mount that uses those triangular shaped wedges to hold it in place?

Re: Brake Caliper Rattle. Arrrrrrgggghhhh
A 71 has four guide pins, two of which go through the brake pads that are steadied by springs. The springs have a 'hook' on the ends that fits into a corresponding hole on the brake pad. This keeps the spring from spinning, and keeps everything properly aligned. It might be that the holes on the brake pad's ears are hogged out and allowing the pad to shift position when the calipers bite.
I suggest identifying which corner the rattle is coming from and making sure that the springs are in fact hooked onto the pad as shown below.
From flyboy2610's thread:

So went and checked it out. The whole caliper rocks back and forth. I reckon this is more a mounting issue. Hmmmm. What now I wonder?
Install this kit? 68/ F250 (4x2), F350 Caliper support kit 2 C8TZ 2120-B
I'll have to look further but hoping the whole mounts are not damaged. And if so that can be repaired. This make sense to anyone?

Re: Brake Caliper Rattle. Arrrrrrgggghhhh
That's probably it. There are rubber lined bushings that go inside of the caliper mounting bracket, to keep the caliper pins and caliper from rattling around. They were a pain in the butt for me to get pressed in without damaging them and had to get a few spares.

Re: Brake Caliper Rattle. Arrrrrrgggghhhh
So glad this forum exists.
Found another post about the same problem and can see the parts I need for repair. Problem is the only place that sells them that I can find is NAPA. Part no 82113A
I'm in Australia so I can't get them anywhere here. There are a couple of old ones on eBay USA but the rubber looks like it's seen better days. So that only leaves NAPA.
Anyone at all know who ships this NAPA supplied part to Austrlaia? Or are willing to do a pay pal deal to send them to me?
I'm wanna buy 4 packs so I have spares.
Thanks.

Do you have Autozone in Australia? They carry it as Duralast # H5506.

Re: Brake Caliper Rattle. Arrrrrrgggghhhh
I special ordered mine from NAPA, then later found out they supplied some with new(refurb) calipers from Autozone when I purchased a new one. I was lucky I had the spares. Make sure you install them in the correct direction as well and make sure you get the old shells out of the brackets. The shells can rust in there and its hard to tell that theyre still there. The shell captures the rubber and keeps it from falling out of the bracket I believe.

Re: Brake Caliper Rattle. Arrrrrrgggghhhh
Thanks for the help.
NAPA won't post to me but that's ok.
No Autozone here but did find the parts on rock auto that cross referenced with the auto zone number and is the correct kit and they'll get them to me in Australia so I'll get 2 sets sent over.
Thanks.
