Dana 44 closed small

Post by svslow »

Who has or is running a lot of power on a dana 44 closed? I daily drive a 67 with a 12v cummins (140hp 400ft tq) and was curious if it's worth swapping if I'm not doing anything crazy.

Could you elaborate a little bit? Are you looking to swap in a new engine into your 67 or is the engine in your 67 and you are looking at swapping in a D-44? Is the vehicle a 4x4 or 2x4 in it's original configuration? It would help me out in seeing if I can contribute.

I have a 12v cummins in my 67 4x4 that still has the dana 44 closed knuckle up front. I was curious if anyone out there is running similar power on their 44 with any issues

I previously owned a 71 F250 4x4 which had the original closed knuckle Dana 44 and a hopped up 390 Police Interceptor. I had more HP but less torque than your set up, and that was my daily driver for 6 years...no issues what so ever.

I would feel just alright if it were a Dana 44HD with the bigger trunion bearings. But regardless. i would think you would be doing trunions bearings every so often now with the weight. I contemplated this when I was coming up with a parts list for my 12v conversion. I went ahead and found me a 78-79 HPD60. Just for the fact that the cummins weights 1100-1200 ish pounds so the higher GAW will carry the weight better and not need as much maintenance as the lighter rated axle. It may be fine if your not pounding it to hard off road. my concern would be trunion bearings wearing out and or possibly breaking a knuckle with the weight. I could be over cautios with this but I didnt want to have to worry about it with my swap.
