HELP!!!!!! Can't find a flywheel!!!

Post by Mr-Dyslexic »

I have a 1970 f100 240 inline 6 with a 3 speed manual. I cant find a flywheel for it and I just found out my parts store gave me a v8 one cause it showed it would work for the clutch I bought.(universal deal) Needless to say I have A HORRIBLE vibration. I need a clutch asap it's my daily. LMC and every parts store in town can't get one for a 240. crazy but it's no joke. Where can I can get one?

Do you have the 10 inch flywheel or the 11 inch?

Im still waiting to hear back from a couple suppliers I use but it seems the 240 and 300 use the same flywheel clutch. The 300 uses a sbf bellhousing and looks as though a sbf v8 flywheel and clutch could theoretically work however it has to be a nuetral flywheel. it sounds like you got a externally balanced flywheel hence the vibration. I would suggest going with the 300 11' flywheel and clutch. This is just from my quick research and the limited feedback ive gotten from my local jobbers, hopefully somebody else with more knowledge in this area wil jump in and point out any mis-information.

edit. I heard back from a jobber. 11' flywheel needs 180 teeth count on the ring gear. If the 300cid 11' flywheel has 180 tooth count I think your golden.

First off thanks for the help! Your spot on about it needing to be a neutral fly wheel and that is where my vibration is coming from. I might have lead on one but it is a hail Mary. I thought about a 300 but idk if will work for sure or if I can even find one. I leaving now to chase down a fly wheel and after I will check the availability flywheel for a 300 if this one is a bust. By chance will my current 11' clutch bolt up to a 300 by chance or do I need another one or will I for sure need a 300 11' clutch? Also what kind of rear main seals do these trucks have? Rope type, two piece or one piece pop in? I don't remember and I literally changed the clutch in the dark last night cause the power when out do to tornadoes and hail. Got to love Oklahoma!

I would think your 11' clutch should bolt onto the 11' flywheel. You can verify it will work by slipping the clutch disc onto the input shaft of your trans to make sure they are compatible. If it were me I'd might just go with 300cid flywheel and clutch application so I didnt get turned around on what I had or didnt have. You can always compare the part number too to see if they are wanting to sell you the same one you already have or a different one. As far as rear main, you got me on that one. I know the FE is a two peice rubber deal but that sounds like a whole other topic and can of worms. Your braver than I. If it just rains I call it a day and go inside. Working outside in tornados and hail? Sounds like John waynes average work day. Must be our California culture.

Heck no! I don't want hail dents on my truck or on my skull. It was in the garage along with all my empty moving boxes (just moved into a new house) and another car had about a foot between the cars and inch or two from the wall on one side and same thing but boxes on the other. I tripped a lot and cursed even more. The upside is once you intall a transmission/drivetrain in the dark, you have it down. I tore it all down again today after work and left it there cause I didn't want to risk messing up my crank and or bearings. Got it all done in 30-45 minute includeng getting out tools and putting up all the tools. I also bagged and tagged + orginized all the stuff I took off. Do you know where you can those c clips used to hold the shift linage rods on?

Edit: looks like I have a one piece rear main seal. I have one on its way and making sure it's the right one in the morning. I got the fly wheel it didn't surface out very well but it good enough to do the job and is better then the one I pulled out of the truck.

Has anyone put a rear main seal in a 240 and what did you uses as a driver. Having a hard time finding something to clear the flywheel and that is big enough.

Your local parts store has a box in the back with a large assortment. Also E clips, snap rings, etc. Just ask to see their box of c clips. They'll know what you're talking about.
