Power Steering Pump
Where can I find a remanufactured power steering pump?
LMC was where I found one but they were out of stock.

The local parts store? Ebay? Dennis carpenter? Macs? The links page has more links.

Autozone, Oreilly, Pep Boys, Advance... get it local and you have more recourse in case it goes whack in a short time. Many offer replacement guarantees too.72bumbee wrote:Where can I find a remanufactured power steering pump?

Btw, I wait to turn in my core until I know its replacement works.

Re: Power Steering Pump
I agree with HIO Silver, turned in my core and the rebuilt pump whines bad. I want to send one off to www.powersteering.com to have it professionally rebuilt, but now I have no core.
I guess I will buy a new one, but I would prefer a good original that has been rebuilt correctly.

Re: Power Steering Pump
I found one in stock at ORieleys
haven't done the swap yet, as I am having apprehension about the hydraulic lines.... do I cut them off or just replace with hoses and clamps?
also, the old one is bleeding out of the case, so I don't think they will take that one back for the core exchange. I know LMC will not.
So... does anyone want to coach me on the swap? As far as hoses and pulley exchange go??
Thanks a bunch!
Steve

Re: Power Steering Pump
Dont cut the lines. One of them is the high pressure line. Thats why it has a fitting on it. The other line is a return line. It clamps onto the pump. If your hoses are damaged get new ones. Or good used ones.
The pulley is removed with a pulley puller. And pressed back on with a bolt and washer.

Re: Power Steering Pump
O'Reilly's will loan the puller which includes the correct tool for pressing the pulley back on. As you will see from my post above I had a problem with a rebuilt. I decided to try another brand of rebuilt pump over exercising my warranty, my time is important to me and I didn't want to change the pump a third time. The second pump came from Napa Auto Parts and does not make noise, but I believe it to be rebuilt by the same company. The decal on the side of the pump with all the warnings is exactly the same on both pumps. So either the suppliers buy their decals from the same company, or the pumps came from the same source. Give this information, I would recommend the cheapest between the two supply stores.
About hoses; the return line operates under vacuum and must not leak or you will have a noisy pump. I would recommend replacing it along with the pump if your budget allows. The supply hose (comes out of the middle of the pump) will let you know if it leaks as you will see the proof.

Re: Power Steering Pump
I purchased a rebuilt PS pump and new hoses at NAPA, everything works great, no leaks, go grinds, no problems.
Make sure you use the recommended fluid or a compatible type.
I raised the front wheel off the ground and filled the pump with fluid then went lock to lock several times without the engine running and checking the fluid level as I go. I then started it up and checked the fluid and added some as I went lock to lock several more times and no air was in the system while still off the ground.
I also added a Hayden #1009 power steering cooler with some extra 3/8 hose and mounted it in front of the radiator. It was 20 bucks on sale at O'Reilly's. Cheap insurance to keep it all cool.
It all works great, happy dance time.

Re: Power Steering Pump
Thanks again all!
I have come to the conclusion that this will be something that my local power steering pro should attend to!
