pinion yoke lengths
hey all, I picked up a 9 center section with 3.25 gears. this particular chunk has a hooded pinion support and the yoke is taller than the one I now have.was told it came out of a bump year truck.i don't think its a Daytona pinion.why the differences in size of yoke and design aka. hooded support.can this set up replace the one I now have? I currently run a 3.70 and want a little more highway friendly ratio.im planning to pull one and slap in the other. Both are 28 spline.

Re: pinion yoke lengths
different 9 inch yokes
short wide
Long wide
1330 U joint
short narrow
Long narrow
1310 U joint
There is also a 1350 yoke but I dont think you have one out of a 427 car

I have 3 third members set up for my truck
3.25 gears
3.50 gears
3.89 gears
I make sure all 3 use the same yoke
I would do the same to ease swapping them around

Re: pinion yoke lengths
Long yoke and 'hood' sticking out over yoke = 3rd member from a passenger car.

Re: pinion yoke lengths
Any 9-inch 3rd member will fit in any 9-inch rear end housing, car or truck. --so long as the axle gear splines of the differential match the spline count of the axles.
The 'hood' is for a pinion snubber. These are found on passenger cars but, you won't find one on a Bumpside. It won't hurt anything being there, it just wasn't something you would find on the driving pinion housing on a truck 3rd member.
If the driving pinion yoke is long, it MAY cause some problem bolting the drive shaft up. Passenger car yokes can be swapped for the shorter truck version.
