clutch noise

Post by abe »

I got my truck stuck in the snow on Saturday. After some shoveling and rocking back and forth I got out. Now there is clutch noise. The noise comes when I release the clutch pedal both when the tranny is in gear or in neutral. And it is hard to shift, especially into third.

Is the clutch going bad or the throwout bearing? Thanks.

your pressure plate is probably weak from the back and forth rocking of your truck.the next thing that will probably happen is the throw out bearing will go through the pressure plate fingers.

I have found that I can shift smoothly if I double shift. Does this help identify or isolate the problem?

What does this involve to fix it?

thanks!

you will need to replace your clutch.new clutch disc-throw out bearing -pressure plate-pilot bushing.and have your flywheel turned.its really not that hard of a job but if you are not very mechanicly inclined then take it to a shop.

no disrespect to you but if you have to ask what is involved in doing a clutch job then you should take it to a shop unless you have a friend that can help you out.its not that hard of a job but if you have not done one then you might have some difficulty.just my opinion

Depending on the transmission you have. You unbolt the transmission from the bellhousing and rear crossmember. Disconnect driveshaft. If floor shift you remove the hump cover and shifter. And slide the trans back or remove ir. Column shift you unhook the shift rods and drop trans. Remove bellhousing. Unbolt pressure plate. Examine pressure plate flywheel clutch disc and throw our bearing on the clutch fork. Look for worn thin or broken springs on the disc. Loik for blueish colors and grooving or pressure plate and flywheel. Replace bad or worn parts. Use clutch line up tool to line up clutch disc as you bolt down pressure plate.

This is not a complete removal or diagnostic statement. I said nothing of piolt bushing or glazed look of flywheel pp surfaces. Or of being able to just hace them turned instead of replacing them.

Working on a project truck. There have been and will be lots of things I have not tried yet.
On my daily driver (my 69 f100), I had a shop replace the clutch.
On my 71 F100, I am planning on engine replacement and transmission replacement and the question was intended to help build some insight into some of the fundamentals needed in the drivetrain area.

That is OK. It is related to a bad clutch and the info was good for me as well. No problem with that at all!

Thanks for your help. It is hard to describe a noise in an email.

To update you all. I bought a clutch kit. NAPA wanted $127. A local parts store called Economy Auto Parts had it for $101. Picked it up today. I found a guy that will put it in for me in his garage at home for $100. A local garage where I have gotten work done before wanted $500!!!

It will be done by Monday morning.

Will report back after I pick it up.
