c4 transmission kickdown.

Post by amanf100 »

I've owned my 1971 F100 sb for over a year with no kickdown cable. I have read posts that say there not necessary for operation. I do believe that its not necessary. But, after finally ordering one for $40 dollars and installing it today I'm glad I did!! The kickdown cable makes my 302 run like a champ! Its a nice addition to the trucks complete operation.

where did you order your kickdown cable? I am about to change from a 3 speed manual to a C4 on my 71 F100. Different engine, but interested to know your source.

I got it on eBay from a guy out of columbus, Georgia. The brand of the cable is RPS I believe. Just under $40.

Was it fairly straight forward to install it? I've been toying with the idea of installing one on my 302, as well. I have an edelbrock carb, and I'm not entirely sure where the kick down cable connects to..

Also, can you explain what specifically changed, in the way the truck runs/drives?

The installation was fairly easy with instructions that were provided with the product. I run a holley carberator and they come with the connection for a kickdown cable. But I believe edelbrock carbs don't have the kickdown bracket it has to be purchased separately.
The most noticeable difference after installing kickdown cable is the truck has better acceleration. The shift points are extended at wide open throttle. Its a noticeable improvement.

There is a company called Lokar - I found them searching through Summit Racing - that markets/makes a variety of kickdown cables, transmission connection cables, etc.

Lokar makes good stuff from what I've read, but I'm cheap and didn't want to pay $100 dollars for a kickdown cable. I got the chepo brand and it has worked good so far and it was only $40.
