OD for a 460
Some parts of Hot Rodding never change, but I've been away long enough for the alphabet soup of trannys to have moved on without me. I have a 69 bump that is getting a 79 460. It currently has a C6 attached. As I approach the "mock up" stages I would like to include the final transmission. (Just saves plowing the same ground twice) What is the current wisdom on ODs for 460s? I prefer something non-electronic or, at least, self contained. I'm an analog kind of guy and a bit of a luddite.

Welcome to Fordification...
With a 460, I'd be looking at Gear Vendors Overdrive (GVO). https://www.gearvendors.com/

HIO Silver; Thanks for the response, but I have to find something that I can get at an auto recycler (Didn't they used to be junk yards? ).

Re: OD for a 460
I'm getting older, so I have to get out more.... I have yet to see an AODE bolted to a big block. 4R70W, hmmm. Research is in order.
Thanks,
Greg B.

E4OD will bolt up to a big block, the AOD won't...there are adapter plates out there though.

Re: OD for a 460
Research a Ford E4OD transmission. It should be a direct bolt up to a 385-series 460 block. A 4R100 MAY bolt up. It's also possible to use some of the stronger internals of the 4R100 in the E4OD.

Re: OD for a 460
Thanks, gang. A little more research, but it's almost as much fun as block sanding.

Re: OD for a 460
There is an E4OD that will bolt to the 460, but it is a pile a crap, hence the nickname E4DOA
If you're not stuck on an automatic then just go with a ZF 5-speed.

Re: OD for a 460
Earlier versions perhaps, however E4/4R's that stand up to big diesel torque are built and driven everday. Simple valve body changes make a significant change.ToughOldFord wrote:There is an E4OD that will bolt to the 460, but it is a pile a crap, hence the nickname E4DOA

Specify and bolt-in a short-shaft Tremec TKO 5-speed from Modern Driveline.
