i have a 1989 aod in my e-150 van....... the trans is shot.
i have bought a good( the fluid looks new) 1983 trans . is it possible to swap these transmissions the 83 to the 1989, the 83 was in a van also.
i do know that the rear trans cone that goes to the drive shaft is 2" shorter & hooked up to a 2 piece drive shaft.
can i take the 83 cone off & put the 1989 rear cone on ?
transswap !

Droon,
I don't have an answer to your question, but I would like to point out - in a friendly way - that you posted this question to a forum focused on Ford trucks, from 1967 - 1972. No doubt there are gents on this forum that could answer your question, or at least hypothesize, but you will likely get a better - or at least quicker - answer in the right forum.
Cheers,
Duane

The '89 AOD would be a better transmission to have rebuilt than to use the '83. The AOD was produced from 1980-1993 however, '80-'87 models have several internal flaws --one primary one, a lack of fluid flow to the tail, that was finally addressed by the factory and corrected in the '88-'93 models.
V-8 models have more clutches and larger servos than the AODs from V-6 model vehicles.
Personally, I prefer a '98-'04 ford 4R70W transmission. It evolved from the AOD and AODE transmissions. Most are of the mindset that the 4R70W is to expensive or complicated to install. It's a much better transmission than the old AODs.
