71' Auto transmission option
Morning everybody. I've got a question that I'm sure has been covered and I've searched but didn't find it. I've got a 71' SWB with a 240 and 3 speed manual. What is the best automatic option for my truck? I dont do any major towing, mostly just a motorcycle in the back every now and then. OD would be great but not if it up's the difficulty and price.

I would think a AOD should work bell housing bolt pattern wise.

Re: 71' Auto transmission option
AOD production was 1980-1993. Models best to stay away from are 1980-1987. --internal flaws that were finally addressed and corrected with the '88-'93 models.
AODs behind 5.0L H.O. engines or 351Ws will have more clutches and a bigger servo than models behind 6 cylinder engines.

A bit more info: http://www.network54.com/Forum/260730/t ... 40-300+six
Ultraranger is correct on the years to look for. Some gripe about the torque capacity of the AOD being "shy" however plenty of 5.0 guys spray still having the stock AOD without any problems. I put a Baumann recal valvebody kit in mine, doing so is a basic necessity IMHO.

Go with the Ford C-4, 3 speed transmission. They are pretty good transmissions.
