Cross Member Removal

Post by Ben68F250 »

Greetings all. I have a 1968 F-250 and I'm having trouble removing the automatic transmission. The cross member at the rear of the radius arms is preventing it from moving. I have the transmission and cross member unbolted but still no luck. Any ideas?

You must remove the intermediate crossmember. Mine needed persuading once all of the bolts were removed. Some were riveted in, so make sure there aren't any rivets holding yours in. I used a large leaded rubber mallet to hammer mine rearward away from the radius arm brackets.

Mine was wedged tight too...required banging with a 10# sledge before it would even budge. Once it moved, it pretty much slipped right on out. Getting it back was was actually harder, so I don't envy the OP. :)

Thanks for the information. I finally got it moved far enough to lower the transmission. Getting the crossmember bolted back in place was an exercise in patience though. haha

That crossmember is impossible to remove and install in a truck with a 460 and Super Comp headers. I had to cut my crossmember in half in order for it to be removable. I fabbed a bracket to reconnect the two halves.
