Explorer Rear Axle Question

Post by IN2FORD »

New guy here...Just picked up a 72 F100 that has already had the CV swap and he also put an Explorer rear in. He mounted it on top of the original springs. Now the problem is it sits lower in the back than the front. I would prefer to bring the back up even or a little above the front. Should I put the axle back under and do the hanger flip or I wondered if the Explorer leaf springs might be an option. I figured the original leafs have got to be tired and flattened some.

How much lower in the rear is it? Can you post some photos?
You could get your springs re-arched or run taller tyres on the rear to compensate.
For instance on my recently sold lowered 67 f250 I ran a 225/75r16 on the front(29.3 inch) and 235/85r16 (31.7 inch) on the rear.
Heaps less work than relocating the axle and will give you the same result.
Here is a picture of the f250 to give you some idea.

2x.....Consistent with above, consider staggered tire sizes (height).

I ended up cutting a coil and a half from the front springs. My CV front was from a police interceptor and I do believe the springs are a bitter stiffer. Plus the 5.0 and AOD aren't near as heavy as an FE, so mine seemed to ride higher than the other swaps I have seen.

My frontend came from a police car so maybe a cut spring may help along with a c-notch. What about the eatondetroit lowering springs> Anybody use them> How do they ride?
I will try to get a pic up tomorrow evening when I can get it outside.

I think I have found part of my problem. Looks like the leaf springs are shot. Especially the drivers side. I am sitting 3/4" lower on the drivers side. So I have just decided to pull the bed off, start cleaning the frame up, yank of the leaf springs and do some measuring to see what I have. Anyone recommend a good reasonable place to buy leaf springs? I have been talking to General Springs. Seems to be a good place.
