tool for T18 shaft bearing removal
the input shaft is very long, so the normal 3-claw type of puller doesn't cut it. I bought the bar-type/clam-shell-type puller/bearing splitter from Harbor Freight, plus an extra large splitter (the HF splitter claims to be only up to 3", but I think it's at most up to 2").
when the 2 sets came, I found that my plan doesn't work, the yoke on the HF puller is only 6" long, while any splitter after mating to the lock ring groove on the outside of bearing, would be > 6" apart.
so I bought this OTC4517 (many stores sell this , you can google out). it's not terribly expensive, I hope I can sell it after my job is done. but with a proper tool, I can pull the bearing more safely.

Post a picture if you can...it will allow us to visualize what you are saying a bit better and come up with a few suggestions

Re: tool for T18 shaft bearing removal
thanks.
here i show some pictures that illustrate the problems
we can see that the input bearing outside diameter is about 3.5--4"
if I use the large splitter I bought separately, after I expand the splitter so that the inner curve are 4" apart, the holes to attach to the 2 bolts are 7" apart,so they can't fit into the 6" yoke from the Harbor Freight puller/splitter set
if I use the splitter from the HF set, again, after I expand the splitter so that the inner diameter is 4", the 2 holes are 7" apart, can't fit onto the yoke either.
also in this picture, the side bolts to connect the splitter together are already not long enough. I have seen from earlycj5.net that someone use a homedepot longer bolt to connect them, but then he's still facing the shorter yoke issue. actually in his post http://www.earlycj5.net/forums/showthre ... ost1117531
you can see that the 2 bolts barely latch onto the yoke and may very easily pop out.
I think with the OTC 8" yoke, this should be safely done

Re: tool for T18 shaft bearing removal
You could take a piece of channel iron that will fit over your puller blow a hole in the middle for the puller bolt and 2 holes for the bolts and that might do the trick

Re: tool for T18 shaft bearing removal
On my New Process 435, the bearing came out with the shaft. as you can see with the snap ring in the one side of the bearing, that should be a stopper so the bearing can't go too far in the case.....Have you tried to lightly tap it out with a brass dowel and a reasonably sized hammer? I don't think it should be in that awfully tight....

Re: tool for T18 shaft bearing removal
I guess my question really should contain the question are you trying to remove it from the case or get it off the shaft (or both). If you are trying to get it off the shaft at this point I can show you what I used on the NP 435 that may work for you as well.....

Re: tool for T18 shaft bearing removal
excellent, any suggestions are certainly helpful!
the outer race of the bearings are free from the case, they slide freely , as reported by many people with their T18s.
but I can't just slide the input or output shaft assemblies out, even though I dropped the countershafts down (you can only drop it for about 1/4 inch at most), because
it seems that the gears are still somehow meshed with the countershafts. removing the bearing from shafts would give more clearance and make it possible to remove the assemblies.

I will snap a pict of the tool and set up I used for my NP435 tonight, I believe they are pretty similar and it should help you out.

Re: tool for T18 shaft bearing removal
I couldn't get to the shop with my youngsters being a pain, I will try again tomorrow, but in a nut shell, I used the clam shell bearing puller behind the roller bearing, used a gear puller (not the one with the three claws) and two brackets, which I threaded 1/2 inch bolts through and into the clam shell. Put the gear puller rod on the end of the tranny shaft and off she came....

No way to knock it out from the inside out? The NP435 is knocked out with a brass bar like cake

Re: tool for T18 shaft bearing removal
Did that help at all? If you can get the bearing out of the case, which I believe it should if it is like the NP 435, but the bearing separator behind it and attach the puller with bolts and extensions as shown...works great for me!
