need help changing my transmission

Post by 67Texada »

I'm looking for help trying to change out my transmission. I have a 67 straight 6 with a 3 speed trans. Is it possible to put a bigger transmission in and if so what do I have to do to make this happen?

First, you can replace it all by yourself. However, if you are working with a jack and jack stands, it might not be a whole lotta fun. I removed and replaced one years ago and I haven't had the opportunity to do it again - Thank goodness.

Second, is your transmission bad?

If not, why replace it?

When you say "bigger", do you mean a 4 speed or a heavier duty transmission or something else?

By the way, the correct forum category for this post is probably the Drivetrain section.

Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in garages. (Apologies to Kenneth Grahame.)

Yeah I was trying to put bigger as in 4 speed or something like that. The one I have in there now isn't bad I just feel its not enough because on the road I can only push it to get up to about 60-65 mph but not sure if thats more of my gears in my ass end. Thanks for the help

Few things you should know.
1st a granny trans (4 speed) and everything else I'm aware of except the 3 speed with overdrive is all about the same top gearing . Until you get into post 80's transmission
I just swapped out my 3.03 for a granny for pulling loads i had a similar issue as you're having my throttle linkage wasn't adjusted correctly and wasn't opening throttle all the way up. Fixed that now plenty of power!!!!!
