Identify my trans leak

Post by kmcypress »

Hey guys,

First post on the forum here. Been looking for a few weeks now. Just picked up a '69 camper special w/ a 390 FE & C6. The trans is leaking fresh fluid from a location I'm not too familiar with. After spraying it down the highest point is near that nut in the photo which is located on the drivers side of the trans. The trans pan is sweating but most of the fluid on it is run off from above. If you guys could give me some input on what it is that and what is and if its just an o-ring that would be great. Just wanted to get some info before i tear it apart. Its a pretty good size leak. Leaving over the size of a half dollar within one night of no driving. :/

thanks.

Your model C-6 didn't have a neutral safety switch on the side of the transmission at the shift lever but, my guess is the O-ring inside the transmission on the lever's shaft is leaking.

See #107 in exploded view in the following link. --It shows a neutral safety switch with the shift lever but the switch wasn't added to the side of the C-6s until around 1977 but, it shows the O-ring I'm talking about.

Kickdown O-ring.
You can replace it by removing the 1/2" nut and the kickdown lever. Make sure you do not allow the kickdown shaft to slip back into the trans.
If it's been a while since your last trans service, you can pull the pan, drop the valve body and replace the selector shaft seal, too.

Yes, you can do it from the outside. Don't allow the kickdown shaft to slide inward while you are replacing the o-ring. Lube the o-ring before installation.
