ZF 5 clutch parts

Post by carbine2 »

Does anyone know if a ZF-5 and an early '80s NP435 use the same hydraulic clutch slave and master? I was going to use an NP435 that came with all the parts needed. Now I am thinking about using a ZF-5 instead. I'd like to use the master and slave from the NP435 but I don't know if they are the same.

The ZF 5 speed I had definitely used a different slave cylinder than my 435, but it was an internal slave vs. an external one. I don't know which year ZF 5 speed you have, but I usually just go to the online parts store and look both up. Lots of times the part numbers match.

I forgot this thread was on here. Since asking this one, I pulled the slave off the 435 and it snaps onto the ZF just like it did on the 435. Mine is external. It is for a 460. I will likely set it up this way. If it doesn't work for some reason, I'll just order one for a ZF.

If you do, it would greatly be appreciated if you did a thread with the details and pictures. I am wanting to put a ZF5 in my 67 project attached to a 460. The biggest head scratcher for me was figuring out how I was going to do the clutch setup. I was considering trying the mechanical/pushrod setup to a throw-out lever. However, I think a nice hydraulic setup would be better.

That's what I did on mine. My 69 F250 was originally an auto (C6) and I put a 460 and a ZF5 in for a while. I used the 90's plastic master cylinder and fabbed my own clutch pedal setup. I ended up doing two trucks like that, one I used the OE plastic line and heated it with a heat gun and re-shaped it to fit. The other I TIG welded inverted flare fittings on the OE plastic line fittings (after cutting the plastic line off) and used a long brake line. Both worked well but the TIG welded one took more time and effort. I personally think going hydraulic will be way easier than trying to hook the mechanical one up. :2cents:

So far I just have the engine in with the clutch hanging on the back. I have been trying to persuade the trans to install itself by staring at it but it just sits there and mocks me. Actually, my other truck died and I had to switch to fixing it before I can do anything else. Don't tow a truck on a flat bed trailer if there is a hole in the radiator. They get a bit hot that way. Needed a new motor anyway. This just moved it up on the list.
I plan to have a guy at a shop in the area do the clutch conversion to hydraulic. I could probably stumble my way through it but I'll let someone with experience handle it. They even have a custom bracket to keep the fire wall from flexing.
