Re: how to pull tranny in pick-n-pull (and other junk yards)

Post by teddyyyy »

I did it!

Today i went to the pick and pull, two boxes of tools in tow

I lifted the engine with the hoist provided by the yard, it's fairly easy, i intended
To lift the tranny together. But later i found that a previous attempt has been made to pull that tranny, using the other approach discussed here, to pull it from below.
The previous guy pulled the tranny mount and driver side cross member bolt, but left the passenger side bolt. The front face of tranny was separated from bell housing

I pulled the engine anyways, it's fun to take it apart and see the internals

Then i took the passenger side cross member bolt. I found it's loose already, but there is a socket fitted on the top, so i put my ratchet on that socket, and loosened from bottom using a breaker bar. After i took out the bolt i found that the moron that tried to pull the tranny last time used a bigger socket on the bolt, it is off by almost 2 mm, and the socket got stuck on the bolt, no wonder he coukd not get it out

Then i looked around and found some old carpet on a nearby truck. That's probaly the only possible buffer material to fit under the truck i was pulling, pick-n-pull
Welds 4 wheels onto the bottom of frame, so there is only about 1ft wide space. I knocked out the cross member and the tranny fell onto the carpet.

Next is to get the tranny out, i tried pulling it, but it does not budge(the friction of the carpet and gravel ground is really strong). And i already feel the pain on my back.

Then i had an idea: how strong can i be ? I can never be as strong as the hoist , right? I'll just pull it out with the hoist! I connected a nylon rope (from home depot, 10$ ) to the end of the chains and wrapped it around the output shaft ujoint . The rope passes the wheel well outside, so i put some cardboard there to reduce chaffing. It worked perfectly, and the tranny came out obediently like a rabbit.

Then i hoisted it, pushed the hoist to the front gate of the yard, backed up my truck, push hoist around truck, lower tranny. Done.

Overall i really liked it, i particularly like the process to figure out ways to do the job. I'm not strong but i dont think this is bad for doing car repair/DIY , because a human body can only have so much power(100-200lb is the normal range?) It's definitely limited, but thinking can essentially open up limitless potentials. My being unable to lift it myself forces me to use safer and easier methods, it's a good thing

the local pick-n-pull does not allpw u to use jacks or grinders for safety. they provide some frame-type cranes that can hoist upwards, but the trck transmissions are mounted below so we cant hoist them

so i wonder what is a safe and feasible way to pull a tranny in the pick-n-pull setting. anybody done this ?
