Power Rack and Pinion

Post by tyn2danet »

Has anyone replaced the steering in their bumpside with a power rack and pinion set up? I kind of want to keep the twin I-beam set up, but want to ditch the old steering for a modern set up. any thoughts or ideas on where to start?

This has been asked before and it can be done BUT the bumpsteer will be enormous and downright dangerous and likely deadly.

Rack n pinion on an ifs works because the tie rod and control arm swings in the same arc due to the pivot being at nearly the same point. Now apply the same principle to a rack combined with I-beams... the beam's pivot is on the opposite side of the frame. Cycle the suspension and the tie rod will swing in a tighter arc effectively shortening its length and 'steer' outwards. Pow! ...bumpsteer that cannot be eliminated without significant re-engineering.

If you really want R&P steering, put in an IFS front end from a Crown Victoria. Lots of threads on here by people who have done it. Here's a good one: http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... hp?t=47610

As HIO mentioned, you can put R&P steering on a twin I beam suspension, but you'll probably live much longer if you don't.
