Question on Rear disc conversion Dana 60

Post by Madman »

If you have done a rear disc brake conversion on a Dana 60, what did you use for a master cylinder? I've got a Dana 44 upfront with Discs, and am converting my Dana 60 to rear disc brakes now, so just thought I'd see what you have done.

My 72 F250 4WD had factory power brakes, when I switched my rear dana 60 to disc brakes I also switched my front to A 76 dana 44 that had disc brakes. My logic was I had 4 wheel drum brakes before, I now have 4 wheel disc brakes, what is the difference in the master cylinder and the proportion valve, my answer was there is no difference. I have been driving it for over a year and not one problem. You can lock it down and of course it will slide all four wheels, but you can press the pedal to the point just before lockup and you better hang on because it will flat stop you in a hurry. I have had several of these old trucks but never had one that stops like this one.

Here is the disc conversion info I used

Thanks for your input. I can see the potential of using the master cylinder, but going without a proportioning valve surprises me a bit, but it works for you then it works!

I do have a proportioning valve, I used the stock one. It was for a four wheel drum setup, now I have a four wheel disc setup, it works great for me.

Disc's normally run a smaller bore master, but isn't required. 4 wheel drum systems don't have any proportioning, they only have distribution. Without proportioning, it'll work, but I'd rather run one and dial it in.

That was my understanding on the Proportioning valve as well.
