CV swap with a Saginaw pump

Post by elgemcdlf »

When the 460 went in the truck the PS pump was swapped for the Saginaw pump on the 460. It has been eating PS belts ever since. I believe I have it narrowed down to a problem with back pressure from the rack. Well low and behold there is a valve available for the Saginaw that drops volume from 3 gal/min to 2 gal/min from Speedway. It is only $20 and I will be installing one on my truck once the engine is finished. I will post results.

Mine has been fine. I had a Saginaw pump from a ford in it to start with, then bought a new one for a 75 nova. Never had any problems with belts. I have serpentine belts, which may be helping. There are no signs of any issues though.

Jeff this started with me wanting to swap to a serpentine drive. I posted in the 460 forum to which I got keep the V belts. I am assuming the serpentine drive system draws more power which is why they said keep the Vs. When I outlined my problem a guy there posted info on the valve for the pump to reduce flow. I guess people with MII racks and Saginaw pumps have issues. I just read Chevrolet valved the pump according to vehicle weight. Your pump may be reduced being for a Nova. Mine came off a land yacht '76 Lincoln with hydraboost. Perhaps swapping to a pump that wasn't set up for hydraboost since I am using a vac booster would also resolve it. The valve is only $20 so either way (valve or pump) I will be spending roughly the same money. Well unless the valve doesn't work.

With a new belt I can get to about 3000 rpm before it starts to slip. Then it just works it's way down the rpm scale until I replace it. I have tried both 15 & 17 series belts with the same results.
