Ok so if any one has seen my other posts i bought a 72 f250 ( according to the guy who sold it to me ) and i have come to find out it seems more like someone at one point in time just took parts from 68- 72 and pieced a truck together, so here is my issue
I can shift through all of my gears, However the actual shifter is loose ( there is excessive play in the stick ) it swings from side to side and if it is not in the correct place it will not go into 4th gear ( I'm assuming because the stick isn't lining up ) but i have no clue how to identify what transmission is in the truck
im not sure if i just nee to tighten things up or is something broke where the stick goes into the transmission, any help would be awesome !!
what transmission do i have?

If reverse is over and up, it's a Borg-Warner T-18.
If reverse is over and down, it's a NP-435.

Only the early T18's were over & up for reverse (Up to and including 1967 if my memory is correct).
The top cover on a NP435 is aluminum. It is cast iron on the Borg Warner T18.

My step-dads 68 is over and up and it is the stock trans in the truck.
If at first you don't succeed. Get another beer.

Re: what transmission do i have?
Thanks--good to know! I looked at a 69 a while back and it was over and down BUT I can't remember for sure if it was a NP435 or T18. I do have a 76 F100 and two 79 F150's with T18's and they are all over and down. All stock trucks as well.67effie wrote:My step-dads 68 is over and up and it is the stock trans in the truck.

Re: what transmission do i have?
does any one know if it was stock to have an access panel in the cab to the transmission ?? I pulled up the carpet today and there it was screwed into the floor board, I pulled that up and sure enough there it was stamped on the top of the tranny it said T18 and my reverse is over and up , thanks for all the answers, was just curious if the access panel was stock or if someone cut out the floor and added it, the floor looks stock but I've never seen something like this before

Re: what transmission do i have?
Trucks with 4-spd manual transmissions and C6 automatics got the add-on hump for clearance. Trucks with 3-spd manual and smaller automatics didn't have the add-on hump, but the transmission tunnel is marked out for one, so adding it is pretty easy.
