U Joint Changing

Post by Subzero »

My U joints have been shot since I bought my truck causing all sorts of noise when changing gears, especially in reverse. I plan to have them changed or preferablely change them myself if possible. I have the slip type driveshaft with I think 3 actual u joints. I've never messed with anything to do with the trans or driveshaft. Where are the best quality U joints sold at ( price does not matter, I like to use the best parts the market has to offer since this truck isn't going anywhere  )?How do I change them out and what tools are needed to do so?
Thanks

I purchased non-greaseable U-joints from O'reilly Auto Parts when I replaced the joints in my truck. The non-greaseable joints don't have the drilled grease passages in them so they are stronger but, greaseable or non-greaseable would simply be your choice to make.

There are several You Tube videos on how to change U-joints but, this is one video on how to do it without a press.

Here's a handy little tool for working on those slip joints, when you pull the driveshaft just pop this in the end of the transmission to prevent fluid loss:

I'd recommend Spicer U-Joints as the replacement type. As far as what tools needed to replace them, I use a larger diameter socket than the u-joint face and a smaller diametr socket, and then I put the them in a vice and press out the u-joint caps. The larger socket allows the cap the be prssed into, and the small socket is used on the other side to pressthe u-joint from the retainer. Some folks use hammers, and say you can bend the yokes if using a vice, but force is force, you can bend it with a hammer, vice, or press regardless. If you want more info on the vice set up PM me.

I do it exactly like Madman and have done it that way for years never a problem.
