ok, this has been an informative post indeed, some great info here.
what about just rolling backwards down a hill and stomping the brakes to lock it up, letting it roll, stomping the brakes, letting it roll
thats how i was taught to 'adjust' auto adjusting drums. the ratchets actuate when the rear shoes shift down away from the stop pin, and pull the cable to click to another position.
do i need to tighten them beyond the auto adjuster? maybe that has been part of my problem!

Yes motzingg, this is what I gathered from the other guys, tightened it as tight as I could, then backed them off until the wheels were 1-hand turn-friendly. For me, that was 7 teeth in front, 6 in the rear. Brakes work like a dream now
