Best tires for stock height?

Post by Engineer »

I have an 71 f250 camper special, with stock everything on it, I love this truck, but don't like the look of its stance with the narrow tires that came on it. I also like the current rims (stock) on it, and want to keep them. I want wider tiers that are all terrain, also I want the biggest tires I can fit on the truck without having any issues. Anyone ever done this? Any suggestions and especially pics would be awesome. :fr:

I am going to assume 2 wheel drive. I don't have any pics but a 245/75/16 is pretty close to stock tire size. Still a pretty narrow tire though. One of the problems that you are going to run in to is that in order to keep a load rated tire that would be appropriate for a truck, to get the width you are also going to get height. That being said one step up would be a 265/75/16 and 2 steps up would be a 285/75/16 or 305/70/16 (same height but 305 would be wider than the 285). Not sure what fits and what hits. A lot will depend on rim width and backspacing as well. For the short time that my f250 was 2 wheel drive it had 265/75/16's on factory Ford accuride steelies and they filled the wheel wells up. Hopefully someone else will chime in with what worked for them.

My F100 came with 235/75-15s on it and I never liked how small they looked. I went up to 265/75-15 and was very pleased with how they filled up the fender wells making it look much stronger.

Edit for pics:

Here mine is with the original 235/75-15s

and here she is with the 265/75-15s

On my 2wd I run 31x10.5r15s on the rear with 235/75/15s on the front. Gives it a pretty cool stance, and everyone comments on how it sits. It's not lowered (other than 45 years of spring sag) but it fills up the wells nicely. I don't have a good pic from the side, and the truck is disassembled at the moment. In this pic you can't really see it... I will scrounge around for another one.
