1961 F100 transmission help
I just bought a 1961 ford f100 with a six cyclinder 223 engine in it, I was hoping someone could tell me how to change the transmission fluid. The transmission has a plug in the bottom and one on the passanger side about 3/4 ways up the transmission. I suppose you take the plug out of the bottom and drain it and then fill it by using the side plug until it comes out, is this correct? Also what type of fluid should I use to refill it? How do I tell what type of transmission is in it? Thanks for you help in advance..

Yes, you can remove the drain plug on the bottom of the trans before you pull the pan.. But I'm not sure about the plug that you are referring to.
Any chance that you can post a couple of photo's? Is there a trans fluid cooler attached to the passenger side of the trans...?
What does it say on your dipstick?.........Donnie

Re: 1961 F100 transmission help
Since you mention a drain plug and a plug on the side of the transmission, I take it the transmission you're talking about is a manual --most likely a 3-speed and isn't an automatic transmission? (I don't know of any Ford automatics, especially that early of a model, with a plug on the side of the case or with a factory drain plug).
If it is a manual, it will need the same 85W-90 weight gear oil that the rear end uses.

Re: 1961 F100 transmission help
Thanks for your help again, and yes it a manual. So, do I just drain the fluid from the bottom and add fluid to the side plug hole until it runs out? Do you know how much fluid it takes, also the truck been sitting for awhile do you recommended doing anything else to the transmission before I change the fluid? Thanks for your input, you have been a lot of help. I find a lot of information on f100 from 1965 and forward but not the 1961
