Hey guys,,
My 1971 f100 while in park very easily can and will pop into reverse, is the a steering wheel column adjustment? Can the column mechanism be rebuilt or. While in park a very light bump will knock it into reverse. Could this be a transmission issue?
.
Any thoughts and idea are much appreciated

It was a known issue when the trucks were built. Ford even added warning decals to the sunvisors of some of the affected vehicles.

Wolf is correct: replace your shift lever & detent in the column, the problem IS NOT in your trans..Ford took it sideways on this one. A lot of people got killed, knocked down by the open door & ran over in reverse. It happened to someone in our town, that I knew.

If you can't find new old stock on these parts from "obsolete Ford parts dealers" a GOOD welder/ machinest can fix you up....
The edges of both parts need to be squared off & a stronger spring used to lift the shift handle...These weren't cut very definite from the factory and dragging it out of park accelerated the problem,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Donnie
