Rear Axle Swap from Dentside

Post by Rayjay69 »

I am thinking of taking the complete rear end out of my donor 75 and putting it into my 72. I know the 75 is wider and I need to cut and reweld the mounts for the leaf springs. I am thinking the wider stance will give me a little more stability and nicer ride. Anyone else out there done this? Better to get some advice now than when I am elbow deep into it!

I did it to my truck but can't comment on the stability issue. I never drove my truck with the original rear end in it. I did it purely for looks.

That's alot to do for two inches or so of track width. A wider set of rear tires would likely provide the "stability" yer looking for. And a better option for overall handling characteristics would be to install front and rear sway bars.

I am doing it to mine but getting a little creative with it. I am putting new housing ends on it so I can narrow it 1.2 inches. That way I will get the "look" I want and still use the 31 spline axles :woohoo:

I did this swap to fit my wheels, did the spring perches as you mentioned, also since my truck is lowered I put the axle on top of the springs.

I had to move the shock mounts as well, they were where the perches needed to be. I cant comment on the wider stance or ride, I changed a few different things that I thought would help, didnt notice much but I mostly just go straight...
