Newer 5 speed behind an early 429?

Post by Bullit »

After looking and searching for a Toploader 4 speed, I found really EXPEN$IVE options and have been looking for an affordable alternative...
I've located a 5 speed trans that was behind a 1988 429/460 installed in an '88 ford 2WD truck..... Model number F 42 assembled in 6/6/88. I was hoping for some advice on how difficult and suggestions on installing in my 1968...
ANY HELP?
From the pics I have on this tranny, it has an incorporated bell housing and I was hoping this setup would be easier to install and locate parts for?

Not F 42, but ZF S5-42.

It's a ZF 5 speed, good transmissions. The flywheel/clutch is a bit of an issue. the early 429/460's were internal balance and used a small flywheel and clutch (different pressure plate bolt pattern). The later 460's with the ZF 5 speeds were external balance with a larger flywheel/12.25" clutch. The flywheels bolt in place of one another, but the balance is wrong.

If I was doing it I would mill the later flywheel to be internal balance and have it balanced on a crankshaft balancer.

Thanks for that info!
Can ya tell me if I might have any other issues as far as "fitment" from the "88" to my "68"?
My "engine guy" told me that when I get my flywheel, to bring it to him and he would balance it for me..
Is it going to require some "machining"?
Thanks!

It's one of those deals where you have to look at the flywheel and decide the best plan of attack based on the tools you have. I don't remember what those flywheels look like, but I would approach it like this-

If the flywheel had a relief in the front with a balance weight left in place I would put the flywheel in a lathe and turn off the extra weight, then balance it.

If the flywheel has a pocket cast into the front for balance I would put it on a CNC mill and mill two identical pockets 180 from one another then balance on a balancing machine.

Let's say you had to make the choice....
Get a early model flywheel...or a later model flywheel...
I understand the early model would "adapt" better as balance is covered... But the later model is larger and needs machining..
Tough choice. I'm going to have to purchase one...just not sure the best one... would the early one "bolt up" without much work to be done? It sounds like the larger one may need alot of work. Probably easier to locate the later one and have it machined as they might be more comon...
Thanks,

Contact Modern Driveline (208-453-9800) and talk to Bruce or Paul as they have complete components to install a TKO-500 or TKO-600 behind 429/460s (as well as FEs).

Their website is oriented towards muscle cars but talk to them to customize (at no cost) the system required for your specific application.

The car transmissions are very different. The 460 ZF5 uses the same clutch as the 7.3 Powerstroke and 5.9 Cummins/NV4500.

I looked up a picture of a 460 ZF flywheel and the cast in imbalance would be easy to machine off.

Boy there is a load of misleading, confusing info on the web about this swap. If I were doing it I would take measurements off the 460 the ZF came from and make sure those dimensions match.

I'm not referring to a ZF5 but rather a Tremec TKO.
