9 in. noise.... grind

I just had my reared rebuilt on my 68. Took the wife to the high school football game, on the way home the rear end sounded like it was going to blow up. It made a grinding noise the came and went. I was about a mile from the house so I just continued. By the way it wasn't vibrating or clunking, nor did it affect the power. When I got home I jacked it up felt the brake drums, pumpkin, everything was warm but not hot. I ajusted the brakes thinking may be it was the new breaks (nope). Everything seems good when you rotate by hand. Any thoughts on this would-be great. The rebuild was all new bearings seals ring and pinion one spider gear was replaced.

I would double check the baics. you got oil in the rear end? could it be the driveline?

The u-joints have been replaced along with carrier bearing. I am going to look at the drive shaft tonight thanks

you may be able to pinpoint the noise by getting the truck up on jacks throwing it in gear and riding the brakes to simulate a load and see if you can definitively find the source.

Well I'm going to come clean. I pulled the axles and the third member out. The bearing closest to the hub is bad. So far everytbing else looks ok. We are going to check everything else out. As hard as this is to say, I didn't have enough oil in the rear end. It didn't leak out. I'm not one to make excuses, I work a lot sometimes to much, I made a costly mistake. Some times I will come out and play with the toys till 12 or 1 in the morning. This is maintenance 101. I hope someone can learn from my mistake Double check your project before you head down the driveway. Glen. PS..Thanks hi boy you called it

Dont worry to much about it man, we could all post to the thread "what have you goofed up before?" Glad you found the reason and hopfully you can salvage alot from the parts you have. At the end of the day after something like this I doubt you will forgetting to put oil in a differential after repairing/replacing again.
