Rear gear shudders

Post by Rockybar »

New to this ford thing, and first 3spd.

Engaging and taking off in forward gears is working great, but going into reverse and engaging the clutch, I have a nasty shudder, and the rear end jumps all around.

I was thinking either the clutch was worn, or the pinion angle is getting real out of whack in reverse.

I'll get what ever details if asked. Bought the truck on Friday, drove it 5hrs home without any issues so I'm a little excited about this project.

thanks
Andy

Check out your flywheel too. Might need to be resurfaced.

I'd be surprised if it had to do with the clutch or flywheel, as the engine and flywheel always spin in the same direction no matter if forward or reverse. Have a good look at the transmission mount, u-joints, and slip-joint in the driveshaft (if equipped). I'd like to think that if the rear springs were twisting enough to throw the pinion angle way off, you'd feel it taking off forward as well. Could it be as simple as rear brake shoes adjusted too tight and binding in reverse? Just throwing out ideas.

Awesome idea, I backed up a few times and slammed on the brakes, and it seemed to adjust them a little better.

Thanks, I owe you a beer

Mine also does this in reverse. Found that the transmission wasn't bolted to the mount, bolted it in and it helped some but still has a shake in reverse and it's not my breaks as it has no back breaks. I had also wondered if it could be the clutch, but I haven't checked the ujoints. Really interested in seeing if you find the cause of it.

Well, I found this today in my LH rear drum brake.

The spring broke and was digging around in the bottom of the drum. Spring must have just failed, cause it started a rubbing noise last evening on the way home.
