L or NL on axle ID page

Post by dustman_stx »

Can someone tell me the meaning of the L or NL on the rear axle assembly ID page? This is probably something any moron should know, but I'm not just any moron. :D

Where is the L located? If it is in between the ratio numbers like 3L25 it is a limited slip unit

L = Locking (limited slip differential)
NL = Non-Locking (open differential)

I was thinking that might be the case, but wasn't sure. Also, some of them have a 4, as in L4 or NL4. Mean 4 pinion gears?

what about L4? i am trying to figure out whether or not my limited slip clutches are 4 or 5 tab without tearing it apart because if its a 4 tab the clutches and steels cost $105, but if it a 5 tab they are almost $250 so i dont want to tear into it and not have enough money and waste my time, also the parts guy i talked to said his book said the early model ford 9 in. are 4 tab and late models are 5 tab but gave know indication to where the line was drawn, anyway i know i have a 31 spline ford 9 in. and it is in a 79 bronco ranger XLT with a 400 and a factory trailer package thanks for reading and any help would be much appreciated
