'72 3 speed kicks out of 1st or fails to go all the way in w

Post by skblixt96 »

Like the title says, my 3 speed on the column doesn't stick into gear most of the time when I downshift to first. It is hard to push in and when I release the clutch it wants to pop out of gear and bounce on top of the gears in the tranny. Why would this be? I originally thought I just had a loose linkage and it wasn't putting it all the way in gear but after checking out all the bushings that doesn't appear to be the case.

Take a close look at the levers on your transmission while somebody puts it into first for you, not running. When they have, see if you can pull the lever down a little or if its bottomed out already. My jam nut on the linkage down there worked loose and the lever got sloppy. Its adjustable at that point. You can fine tune the stroke of the linkage with the slot in the linkage rod.
