spindle nut removal help

Post by boze_man »

hey all...have a 72 f100 and tryin to remove the front drums for servicing the brakes but can't turn the spindle nut...

I ran to the autoparts store to get the 4 tab spindle nut socket but if I put any pressure on it it slips off...I even used a ratcheting tie down strap to hold socket/breaker bar snuggly in place but no go...hit it with pb blaster but no go...before I start putting the chisel or a torch to it I want to make sure I am messin with the right part...(see pic below)...note the 4 notches

also just to confirm...the spindle nut loosens by turning CCW? (lefty loosey/righty tightey)

any advice? I figured the drum brakes would be as easy to do as my buddy's '70 maverick boy was I wrong...

thanks
bill

Most likely just froze. There should be a washer behind it & then another nut. The grease can make it stick pretty good to that washer. Spray it all down with carb cleaner or something similar. Make sure it does not have a tab bent over somewhere holding it in place. If all seems good try running it in first & then backing it off.

thanks for the advice...gave it a good spray down with some carb cleaner then some more pb blaster

ended up fittin some small wood wedge pieces to hold the spindle nut socket snug so it wouldn't slip then was able to get some torque on it and free it up

thanks again

Glad you got it off.

I don't know which socket you have, but this style is better, won't slip off as easy,

Also you can use a hammer and a chisel to get it off as a last resort...

yeah that socket would have been great but never knew to look for till it was stuck...so after spending 14$ on the first and no luck called the autoparts store to see if they had that one and that version and they wanted 35$ and have to order...of course wouldn't take back the barely used one I just bought 30min earlier...cutting 4 wood wedges out of a scrap 2X4 and jammed in there kept the socket from moving and it free'd it right up

now will see how it works on the next wheel...lol...at this rate will have the brakes done by xmas
