Re: '70 Sport Custom Rebuild - working on doors

Post by sargentrs »

I used some sheet metal shears and my cut off tool to cut the piece out.
mms_img19863380.jpg
Now to form the v-break in it. Since I don't have a bench vise, I had to improvise with boards, pipe clamps, hammer and pliers. I clamped the piece between my bench and a board and tapped it down about 45*.

Then flipped it over on the other bend line and tapped the other way down about 45%, spun around and repeated on the other bend line.

When I was done, I had a halfway decent v-break in my oversized patch piece.
mms_img1826308873.jpg
About 45 minutes with my pliers, snips and the bench grinder and I think I've got something that'll work.
mms_img155781387.jpg
Had a few more minutes so I started on the outer patches. I had cut a piece of outer door skin from my parts truck before I scrapped it so I used it to mark out my outer patch pieces so I'd match the curve of the door panel.

Cut 'em out with my snips
mms_img2063210706.jpg
and spent another 20 minutes on the bench grinder and had the front patch ready.

That's all the time I had today 'cause I gotta go pay my "honey dues".

I had been dreading this part all along but, all in all, it wasn't too bad. Now to weld 'em in and pretty 'em up.

Re: '70 Sport Custom Rebuild - bump therapy

Post by sargentrs »

So I've been kinda down about not making any progress on my truck. Haven't had a day off work since New Year's and weekends are filled with visiting grandkids, grocery shopping and honey do's. I've been about to blow up! So I took today and Monday off work to spend some quality time in the man cave and do SOMETHING for the truck, anything! Crawled off into the blast/paint booth, dropped the door down and fired up the blaster. Hot, nasty, smelly....just what I needed. After a quality 5 hours of "man time", I had a few parts ready to paint. I feel much better now. Monday, we paint.

I'm with you on the therapy! Just leave me, my chemicals and tools alone and I'll return a happy man.

Good work! You're making me want to go do more body work!

Looks like a lot as been accomplished with the little time that you had  . That sand blasting sure beats the crap out of grinding and sanding no matter what size of blaster is provided.
