Just read through what U R doing. Been there and I appreciate all the work U R doing on the Bump. Did I say work? When U enjoy the job it isn't work. It is fun, although I do grumble now and then when having fun.

Ok, it's spring time now and time to get back on the bump. Went down to the man cave, cleaned and organized and dragged out a door to start a little patchwork. Driver's side: Bottom corners rusted through, crease down the side under the molding, and multiple mirror mounting holes from the PO(s).

First I marked out the corners and cut 'em out with my air cut off tool.

On the crease down the door side, I took a hammer and punch to the holes to drive 'em down below surface. It actually looks worse than it is, less than 1/32" deep, so a little body filler will take care of that. I'm putting the molding back over it so no sins will show.

Moved up to the mirror holes. I guess the PO was thinking "Hmmm..I don't like those West Coast mirrors but the bolts are rusted. I know, I'll just RIP 'em off the door. Ooops, I need mirrors. Hey look, Walmart has some cheap plastic ones for only $5 but where should I put 'em? Aw heck, I'll just drill some holes anywhere. Darn they got loose, I'll just drill more holes and slide 'em forward a little. Ooops, they're in the way of the vent window, I'll just drill some more holes and slide 'em back...." So, break out the hammer and punch and tap the edges of the holes back down below surface and hit 'em with a grinder to highlight the low spots. I'll have to cut out some sheet metal for a back up patch and weld 'em up, then body filler back to contour. Oh joy! That little crack at the window channel will get tacked while I'm at it.

Awesome. Who was the PO of your truck? I think they got a hold of my doors too. I have enough holes to mount any possible combo of mirror. And then some.

Thanks! I like the detail you're putting into yours too. I'd like to find the PO again and wring his fool neck. I didn't find the other holes til I removed the $5 Walmart mirrors.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to make one of these....

Make it out of thin cardboard or card stock first and trim it just a little bigger in steel when you're satisfied with the shape. After that, a vise, some pliers (duck bill if you have 'em), a hammer, a small amount of final trimming, and patience until you get the same piece without the holes!

Time to start patching. I started with the most difficult part, the bottom inside corner of the driver's door. I had a left over piece of my replacement floor pan so that seemed like good patch panel material. First I spray painted it white so I could mark on it. I took a piece of ad paper I had laying around and wrapped the old piece I had cut out, good and tight, making sure it formed to the contours of the piece. Then I took my pocket knife and rubbed it firmly around the edge, effectively cutting it to the profile. I made sure to mark bend lines where I would be bending the piece.

Then I used the paper template to mark the outline on to the floor pan piece, leaving about 1/8" of extra material all around for trimming. I also marked in the bend lines while I was at it.
