C4 tailshaft vent
Hey guys,
I got to looking at the vant on the tailshaft of my C4, and couldn't feel any screen or anything in it to prevent debris from getting into the trans. What should be there, or am I missing something?
Thanks,
Brandon

I don't think that you will find a screen in there. It is just a "wiggle vent" very little clearance between the post & the cap with small openings.
If you are running in Mud bog races, you can locate this vent up into the engine compartment with a hose & a 350 THM vent....
for street use, you are fine.........Donnie

Thanks for the reply Donnie.
What is the "cap"? I can't see in there with the trans tucked under the truck, but I can stick a right-angle screwdriver in the hole. Forgive my ig-nance.

Here's the vent-cap on my C6, in a different location than yours, but should be similar.

Re: C4 tailshaft vent
It looks like your cap is missing from what I can tell..If you can stick a 90 degree tool in your opening, you just have a tube sticking up, correct?
Look at the prior C6 post, there is just a cap crimped over the post, looks like yours is missing...If it is too close to the floor to press another one in, just fab. up a hose & loop it. water is the most likely concern..........Donnie

Thanks for the pic. Yes Donnie it seems like it's just a brass tube that's sticking up.
If I were going to replace the cap, what would I use to stick one on there and crimp it? Or is this a buyable item?

Re: C4 tailshaft vent
You will probably have to find on on a salvage unit...Take 2 screwdrivers & pop it off....the cap is a loose fit , kinda like a "jiggle fit". You should be able to tap it onto the stem...I know that the space is limited, just try a 3/4 wrench to tap the cap on. It is crimped from the factory that makes them, but as you can see by looking at yours, the fit is loose...........there is no pressure there....Maybe someone can mike the stem & post it on here & I can check if they are the same size as a 350 Chevy...the bore that is, I have those & can send you one....There is not a C4 around here that I can check.........I parted out over 200 cores when I closed my shop.....You can call a dealer to see if they are available....
Also there is a guy on here that salvages cores that may be able to send you one....I may be wrong, but I think it is Merlin???????
I'll post this & see what happens...........Donnie

Re: C4 tailshaft vent
Thanks again Donnie. I'll just stick a rubber hose on it until I can scrounge up a cap somehow.

Re: C4 tailshaft vent
Does this even look like what's supposed to go in the transmission? Everything on this truck was screwed-up, jerry-rigged, and improvised by the PO, so it's likely this isn't even the right thing.
Again i appreciate any input. Thanks,
Brandon
