M5R2 vs ZF-5

Hey guys, I would like to know what I need to swap to a modern 302 truck 5 speed. I also want to know what tranny would give me better gas mileage. With parts can I reuse with each tranny (flywheel, starter, and whatever else). I also have headers so want to make sure I can still use them with what ever tranny I pick. also does anyone have pictures of how they made the clutch master cylinder work with the stock clutch pedal.

If you don't need granny gear the Mazda would get my vote. I like both transmissions, but actually feel the M5R2 is a better design for it's application. The ZF5's are slightly larger inside, but use fewer bearings. I've seen a lot more ZF's broken than Mazdas, but they were all 7.3 versions.

Drill some holes in the right spot and bolt the Ford clutch master to the firewall. You can put it on the left or right of the brake master/booster. I would go outboard of the booster. I guess it's just a matter of careful measuring and cutting.

I've seen guys brace the hell out of the firewall where the put the clutch master, but I never have on bumps and it's always worked fine.

Ive been meaning to do a write up about this but heres the jist of it...

First off if your truck is a 4 speed you could probaly find a hydraulic clutch to find your original flywheel but i went ahead and got a new flywheel so i could use a 11.5 inch clutch. If you get a new flywheel make sure its the same diameter and tooth count and you should be able to reuse your starter. Also i have headers on mine and i have had no problems with them when installing the transmission and cant forsee any when i start driving it.

For the master cylinder i mounted it inboard of the brake master and welded a pin onto the original block that the old manual linkage hooked up too on the clutch pedal, and made it so it would have enough throw to completely engage and disengage. I reinforced it with some short pieces of angel iron and havent seen any flexing afterwards.

Finally i was faced with the same choice you have and like average said if you dont need the granny i would go with the M5R2. I brought mine home from paint yesterday :woohoo: and finally was able to give it a workout for the first time. :D The tranny shifted great and it was nice being able to downshift instead of using the brakes. So far ive been very pleased with it, and would highly reccomend it :thup:
