Cruise o matic help

Post by 5lmustang »

I've got a 67 f100 with a 352. I want to put a cruise o matic back into it like it had from the factory, it has a c6 right now. What I need to know is what cruise o matics will work in my truck? What codes , can I use one from a car or is the gearing useless for a truck?

You may want to introduce yourself on the welcome page.

Why do you want to use a '67 transmission?

According to the factory manuals, the 1967 ford had a HD MX transmission which some call it a FMX. From what I have read, the transmission is difficult to find and not many parts are available. Cruise o matic was a generic term for a number of transmissions. I suggest do some additional research. I plan to install a c6 in my 67 when the time comes.

Thanks for the help blue250 it sounds like you've already gone through the transmission ordeal. I want it to look factory new when I'm done restoring it that's why I was looking into the X transmissions. I guess it dosent have to be a x tranny and c6 parts are more abundant...

Damn it, now I have to consider another transmission option!

I will probably keep the c6 for practical reasons. Thanks blue250

Hi, if your truck had a COM in it originally, & you want to do a completely original restoration. They are iron case units, not that difficult to build, somewhat harder than a C4 or C6, & yes a bit more difficult to find, but they are out there...The C4 & C6 are better units as they were designed after the COM & made some improvements .But the MX/ FMX were OK in their time. If you are judged in original construction, A sharp judge will pick this up. All depends where you want to go....If you are just building a good rider, the C4 & C6 are easier to find & less costly to build...... ON the COM, The gearing is the same pick up or car....The case is iron & the bell housing bolts on....There is not much in the way of HD parts available for these...as some one else noted---Ford called everything COM...., but there were 3 diff. units used..........Donnie :2cents:

I've got an original 67 COM in my Ranger, never gave it much thought, haven't researched it much either. Good to know it's an odd duck... like half the **** in the 67's LOL

The 67 MX Cruiso is a one-year only transmission. Earlier models will bolt up, but they have the early shift patterns. In 1967 all manufacturers changed from a hodge-podge of shift patterns to a standardized shift pattern.

I don't remember the exact code for the transmission although I think it may have been PFB-A. 5 years ago I had 3 of them on the shelf, but have since parted them all out.

You could install an earlier MX and change the valve body to a 67 valve body, but then the numbers won't match the vehicle.
