Re: Just installed AOD, making whining noise, need help w/ diag
Hi, after hearing the noise (good post) it sounds to me like a converter stud rubbing the aluminum plate. are you sure that there is not a bend or dent in the plate....It is not a pump whine...DON"T pull the trans until you drive it, the diagnosis is easier with the trans in the car.. I can walk you thru a few more test's if you can drive it...I would access the converter studs & get a bottle of white out from you stationary store, yes, they still make it.........paint the ENDS of the studs & see if you have a rub...........By second guess would be the starter... If you can't see anything then take the nuts off the converter & see how much it will move in & out...need at least .125
Are you MIXING parts? engine from here, trans from there, flywheel from something else, flywheel on wrong or wrong flywheel , wrong starter ?
Did the converter come with the trans.....Or was the engine & trans a complete unit from a donor
I would concentrate my search to something rubbing, unless you have no end clearance at the conv to flexplate
I asked in my prior post, do you hear this in PARK & NEUTRAL or just in gears?............I heard the noise, give me a few answers to my questions & we may figure this out . I can only help you if you answer my questions.................Donnie

Thanks for joining in, Donnie. Glad you could watch the video, I only have internet access on my phone and it wouldn't let me watch it. I kinda figured it wasn't pump whine when he said it could be heard over open exhaust. I'll keep checking in here, I hope you get on the road soon "71"!

Re: Just installed AOD, making whining noise, need help w/ diag
Update. Pulled starter again and rotated flywheel. No signs of rubbing at all. So I thought spraya little pb blaster in the area, no luck. Jacked tranny up while running to see if made difference. Nothing.
Finally, I'm not a believer in additives for the most part, but I had a bottle of Lucas tranny fluid. Put about half in and noise went away completely! Now I'm left with the question what does this mean? Worn pump gears? Dried out front seal (no leaks) TC on its way out....or maybe just pump cavitating and thicker stuff caused it to start pumping better?
Ps. Motor, flywheel, starter 84 bronco 351w ho. Tranny blockplate TC 91 f150 and was making noise in all gears.

Re: Just installed AOD, making whining noise, need help w/ diag
Spoke with guy at transmission shop again and seem to come to the conclusion that bearing inside torque converter wasn't getting oiled. Probably from setting. I'm going to run it and see how it goes. Hopefully that was it.
Just want to say thanks to Chad67 and Donnie for help/pointers. There is a wealth of information on this site and some very knowledgeable ppl. Nothings worse then trying to find a problem you can't see or put your hands on....just feels great when you finally figure it out. Thanks again

That wealth of information is why I joined here. I believe that a person should learn from mistakes, but only a fool needs to make them all themself! Most likely any problem we can come across, someone else stumbled into before us. I believe a little research can usually save alot of time. I haven't gotten too far into my project, but I'm sure as I do, I'll be asking more questions here.

Re: Just installed AOD, making whining noise, need help w/ diag
Bad news. Problem not solved. Cut down an old
D/s I had and hooked it up so I could test drive it. Noise came back with a vengeance when I started back up to drive it. Took it out of the driveway but I never took it above 15mph, noise was unbearable. Seemed to move fine. Parked it for now. Maybe pb I sprayed on it worked itself in for a bit. Back to the drawing board. Going to do Donnie's suggestions.
Tranny fluid is full, dipstick came with tranny.
There are no marks on block plate that I can see unless its rubbing on top.
Ill get some whiteout and put it on bolts to check.
It could be the starter, but when I tested it unhooked bendex worked fine. I put my hand on starter when making noise and I didnt feel it turning inside.

Re: Just installed AOD, making whining noise, need help w/ diag
Okay. I went out to mark the torque converter bolts and attempted to rotate motor by hand. Rotated a little and heard rubbing around starter area. Pulled starter and rotated by hand. NO MORE NOISE! So starter is interfering with flywheel somehow or not disengaging. Since starter came from boneyard too, I'm going to replace it first and see if it still makes noise. If it is the starter, It must only be sticking when its under load....

Re: Just installed AOD, making whining noise, need help w/ diag
The starter in my wife's van wasn't disengaging about 2 months ago. Made a heck of a noise! She told me it had been doing it for a few days! I started and shut it off at least 20 times and it wouldn't disengage. Whacked it several times with a hammer-no change. I took the starter off and as soon as I touched the gear slightly, it popped back in. As soon as the smoke stopped coming out of my ears, I bolted it back in and it has given me no problem since.

Picked up new starter and same issue. This time I could really hear it when I turned by hand. I shimmer starter out with some washers about an 1/8 and works perfect. Never had to shim a ford starter before. Flexpate warped? Its casting C5AE-A. At least I know what problem is now. Thanks again

You could put a dial indicator in the starter hole (with it removed of course) on the flex plate and have someone rotate the engine and see how much the needle moves.

Are you sure inspection cover or the engine plate is not bent in and rubbing on flex plate.

Re: Just installed AOD, making whining noise, need help w/ diag
Team , just for a wrap up on this thread.........flexplates have diff. offsets, could be that the stress plate ( small plate) that fits under the conv. to crank bolts is misplaced. Also tell your trans man that this converter does not have any bearings in it.. Ford used bakelite thrust washers on both sides of the stator fo MANY years....None of the AOD's had bearings in the converters from Ford.........Some after market builders would put a bearing on the impellar side of the stator..........Now everyone does.........Glad you got it going
I WOULD STILL CHECK THE CONVERTER FOR CLEARANCE>>MUST MOVE IN & OUT AT LEAST .125.....you should Not have to shim the starter, Your noise may be gone, but there is still a fault.........that 1/8 inch is critical............Donnie

Re: Just installed AOD, making whining noise, need help w/ diag
I know something is not right. If I had to suspect something it would be the flywheel. It is a 164t 28oz, but I'm not sure what tranny it was originally bolted to. I'm going to double check torque converter clearance/play. I'm sure flexplate is not rubbing on engine plate.
The parts store calls for a different flexplate for aod/351 combo than the one original to the bronco. Think I'm going to buy one for a 86 crown Vic with 351/aod. That might be my issue.
84 bronco flexplate d1zz-6375-a or pioneer fra202
86 CrownV E0AZ-6375-A or pioneer fra205
Flexplate that's installed is C5AE-A. If its a C6 flexplate then that's my problem. Trying to find info on it

C6 trans did not come out until 1966-------your flexplate has a 1965 part #.............I am going from memory, for what it's worth..Donnie
I am not up to speed on flywheel part #'s but a C5AZ # was first used in 1965??????????????????? & later

Re: Just installed AOD, making whining noise, need help w/ diag
Yeah, but ford continues a part/part number until there is a change from my experience. So its possible to have an 80s motor with 60s date coded parts. I just picked up the one for factory 351w/aod. Apparently if it is a C6 flywheel it can push the t/c back into the pump. Hopefully hasnt caused and damage if so.... Ill know later on if so =(
