Hey everyone, new member here with a problem with my NP435.
I have a 72 F100 390 4x4. Had an issue of the transmission only shifting into reverse with the engine off. Took the top plate off and re-aligned the shafts so I could then find 1, 2, 4, and R. Still can't get 3rd.
Now, the other issue I am having....after starting the truck, if I put it in 1st,2nd,4th and let out of the clutch, I get nothing. Putting it in reverse and letting the clutch out the truck doesn't move but it almost stalls the engine as if a load is actually being put on it. It almost seems as if R AND a forward gear are engaged. Is that possible?
Any recommendations on my issues?

Take the top cover back off and look for broken roll pins on the shift shafts, you can spot them by the fact that the shaft moves without moving the shift collar.
Also you need to make sure the clutch is adjusted properly and is releasing completely

Can you explain the last part of that first sentence. I see the three shafts under the shifter where the forks are sitting. How do I test for broken roll pins? How easy will the shafts move?

Re: New member, issue with NP435
This is a difficult question to answer this way because you're missing something that should be pretty obvious.
The plastic thrust pads on 435 forks break down and fall apart in 40 years or so, but they don't cause two gears at once. Like Brutus said the shift lugs and forks can bend and break the roll pins that locate them on the shift rails, but this ONLY happens under extreme abuse/misuse.
Sounds to me like you are completely missing getting the forks into the sliders when putting the top plate on.

Any place to buy new shift fork shims? I am missing 2. And I will re-attempt placing the top cover on and aligning the forks.

Any transmission parts house in North America will have them.
