1968 f600 6x6 yes i said 6x6 question

Post by jdf »

i recently got a 1968 bumpside f600 6x6 . this truck sits really high looks like a monster truck, in fact i have to crawl up on the front bumper to even see the engine and i am 6 foot tall . it even has a front mounted pto winch on it . anyway my question is this truck has timken detroit axles with 6.71 ratio and it has a sticker telling about them on the glove box looks factory to me but i was told they didnt offer a 1968 f600 in a 6x6 from the factory and the frame is double plated all the way to the front that looks like it was added after the factory . so is this something that the factory done ????? or is it maybe a conversion ?????? cant seem to find much info on the truck or the timken detroit axles on the web any one out that can point me in the right direction i would greatly appreciate it . thanks

There are truck upfitters that install different beds, accessories and do 4x4 and tandem conversions.

There are a lot of different manufacturers of heavy steer axles. 6.71 is a taller ratio so the truck must be meant for the road which is pretty cool. A lot of the big truck steer axles are planetary with ratios from 10:1 through 20:1.

I guess the big question is what does this stuff matter? What are you going to do with a gas powered 6x6 truck that likely weighs over 15K pounds empty?

i have a factory boom truck bed that am going to put on it. it will then have a front winch and a rear winch and with the removable boom pole you can load junk cars 2 or three high , change truck cabs, change engines, it would make a great recovery truck the uses is unlimited for a truck like this . and then we have the fact that it just looks way cool setting as high as it does .i will get some pics on here in the next day or two .
