Dana 70 axle compatibility
Are a 1967 f350 Dana 70 rear axle and a 1979 f350 Dana 70 rear axle compatible? The axle is a single wheel, not dual wheel. Are the parts the same? Are the perch distances different?

Re: Dana 70 axle compatibility
The spring perches set wider apart on the dents to start with:

I also know that on the dent era DRW D70-the axle shaft bearing journal got smaller-making it weaker.
A few guys here have changed to a newer Sterling axle, maybe Dustin or someone can chime in here on the benefits of doing that.

Re: Dana 70 axle compatibility
The 73+ Dana 70 was actually a real Dana 70, the bump version is more like a Dana 60 with a little bigger ring gear.
A 79 F-350 2wd may have a 34" wide frame, I don't know. 73-77 F-350's used the narrow 34" frame rails and 2 1/4" rear springs just like bumps. I've never put a tape measure to a 78-79 F-350 2wd and a lot of wierd stuff happened in 78-79.
Yes, you can bolt in a sterling from a 1997 or older F-350 cab chassis truck. This would mean any F-350 that did not come with a pickup bed on it.
