E4OD in 67 Camper Special?

Post by 67 Camper Special »

I currently have a C6 in the truck behind my 460, but have an E4OD on the shelf. I am converting to diesel in about a year when I get some time, but in the mean time it would be nice to have another gear.

What is involved in this swap and how much is the huge case a problem. If its too much of a problem I will just wait and put in a 4l80E when I do the swap to Isuzu power.

Thanks, Larry

I don't have any first hand experience with the E4OD but I do know it came out in 1989. It was used with small block Fords and the 385-series big-blocks (460 ...would bolt up to a 429 as well). It is the overdrive version of the C-6. Shifts are controlled electronically.

I have a 4R70W that I will be rebuilding and installing in my '69 F100 Ranger. The stand-alone shift controller I have is the Optishift that came from Baumann (manufacturer & product name recently chnaged to US Shift.com, the controller was renamed, 'Quick 1') --but it is the very same controller I have, just has a different face plate on it. It will also control the shifts of an E4OD.

Thanks for the link.

Nice looking shorty. I had one like that in high school. Came with a 302/3 speed, dropped in a Boss 302/4 speed. It was faster than was safe and cost me my licence. But it was fun!

This is advice for any one thinking of using an E4OD in anything------------The '89 was a disaster, Ford made drastic changes to this unit in 1990
The '89 was a stand alone year Get a newer unit if you are going that route..........Donnie

I have no clue what year mine is, and I have read enough bad about this transmission that I am going to use a 4L80E when I do my conversion to diesel. Till then I'll keep the C6 in the truck.

I did crawl under a new Dodge truck the other day to take a peek at the new 8 speed tranny. Its not as big as I thought it would be, about the size of the E4OD I would say. If it turns out to be any good that would be an awesome tranny behind a small diesel. Someone will come out with a standalone. Probably Chrysler, they are good about that kind of thing.
