5 speed trans or c4
I have a posting in the engine section but wanted to toss one on here as well. I have a 68 ranger, original 390 3 speed. I want to go to a 302, preferrably 5 speed but considering a c4 or c6. A friend of mine has a 66 mustang, 302 and had a 5 speed in it for a long time before getting a world class t5 and found that the 5 speed he had been running was out of a 6 cyl tbird......said he always thought 1st gear was low, anyway i'm curious what 5 speed trannys will bolt up to a 302, how hard its going to be to put it in or if a c4 or c6 would be a better way.....just like to gewt some input

It depends on what you are going to use the vehicle for. AOD is also an option.

Like to use it for daily transportation at some point (have to get something other than the 2/60 air conditioning) want to drive it pretty much anywhere, have some fun with it. Also, it has a 3:25 gear

T-5's were all World-Class from 1985-on. 2.3L 4-cylinder T-5's generally had 4.03 or 3.97:1 1st gear ratios. 5.0L Mustang GT/LX T-5's had a 3.35:1 1st gear (wide ratio gear set). '93 Cobra Z-spec T-5's had a 2.95:1 1st gear ratio (close ratio gear set).
Improvements were made to the T-5's in 1990. Best factory T-5 transmissions came in the 1990-1993 5.0L Mustangs/Thunder Birds or from the '93 Cobras.
1994/'95 Mustang T-5's have longer input shafts and a deeper bell housing than previous T-5's.
AOD automatics came out in 1980. Worst year model AOD's to have are 1980-1987 due to lack of lubrication and some internal design flaws. Many AOD design problems were addressed with the '88-'93 models.
A much improved electronic-shift version of the AOD came out in the '94/'95 Mustangs, known as the AOD-E.
An even better evolution the AOD/AOD-E was the the 4R70W 4-spd automatic transmission that came out in 1993. Best year models of it are from 1998-2003 3.8L Mustangs, 4.2L Ford F150/E150 or from 5.0L Explorers. You do not have to have fuel injection to run a 4R70W. It will work with either carburetion or fuel injection, with a stand-alone shift controller. (2) starter bolt holes in the bell housing means it will fit a 'Windsor' block pattern. (3) bolt holes in the bell housing indicates the transmission is for a 4.6L/5.4L engine.
If the vehicle is going to see a lot of highway driving, an overdrive transmission is going to make it a lot more pleasant than having a non-overdriven C-4/C-6.

Re: 5 speed trans or c4
Started my Tremic TKO 600 conversion today, removed the old 4 speed and installed the new Mcleod steel flywheel and clutch assembly. Tomorrow I'll install the Tremic and button it all up. I'd post pictures but I have no idea how to do it on this site.

Re: 5 speed trans or c4
Ive found that photobucket is the best way to do pics because of the size requirements. I am really confused on some things. I have a 91 302 and pulled the 5 speed out of a 98 mustang 3.8, same bolt pattern. Why can I not use the 3.8 flywheel and clutch? Assume I habve to use the 3.8 starter....

Ok well the trans is in and almost finished just waiting to get my driveshaft back in the morning and need to make a trans tunnel cover. I guess I'll use a shifter from my mustang conversion until I custom build one around the seat.

Truck drives nice with the 5speed big improvement over the old 4speed,finished the shifter and its off to the plater and now need to order carpet. Thinking I might look for a nice f100swb to play with now.

Re: 5 speed trans or c4
Ok, this is the million dollar question. How do i find out if the flywheel from a 98 mustang 3.8 is 50 ounce or not or if the 98 3.8 mustang hhad a 50 ounce harmonic balancer.....im having no luck on the net

Re: 5 speed trans or c4
As stated in the other thread, you need a flywheel for a 302 in a later model truck. That will get you 50oz imbalance and 164 tooth ring gear. If you lived close enough I could give you one. You CANNOT use your 3.8 flywheel as the balance is incorrect.
