Front Windshield Removal.

Post by blue68 »

How do you properly remove a front windshield without busting it?
My dad tells me it's impossible, but he said it jokingly, so i'm confused.

My parts truck has a perfect one, and I'd like to hang on to it.

Use a razor blade or utility knife and cut the lip off the inside of the gasket in the cab. Have a friend apply gentle pressure from the inside while you guide the window out.You might also use a hacksaw blade and cut all around the winshield while doing this.
Don't try to remove the windshield without cutting the lip off the gasket. You will almost certainly break the windshield if you try that!

I went around to outside of the windsheild on my Toyota. Then just reached around the piller and pushed the windshield toward me after it was cut all the way around. Worked out great.

Yup, exactly what flyboy said.

I just removed mine from my doner truck and a sharp razor knife worked well. Dont even think about trying to save the gasket.
Just cut it all the way around from the inside, and gently push the glass out from the inside starting at either one of the top corners. Then work it around till you can just lift it out of the bottom lip in the gasket.

Do the Ford windshields have the goop between the windshield glass and the gasket?

Mine just had a glob of it on each corner under the outside lip, between the pinch weld and the gasket.

I got my windshield out of a salvage yard and the gasket was the zipper type. All I had to do was remove the zipper parts and everything slid right out. The zipper gasket was in better shape than my original so I used it.

My neighbor called it a zipper so I doubt that's its technical name. There's a groove in the outside of the gasket and a round rubber strip sits in it. The round rubber thing is about as big around as a pencil. I removed it and then the windshield slid right out. I think it was the last thing I put in after installing the windshield and what it does is tighten everything up. Go to that link posted by Chasbod and it says that Ford redesigned the gasket in 77-79 models and calls the zipper thingy filler strips. I think I got this one from a 78.
