c-4 shifts hard

Post by irpurty »

lately my 73 f100 with a 302 and a c-4 has started shifting very hard when going from 1st to 2nd, it goes from 2nd into 3rd fine but at normal acceleration it shifts so hard from 1st to 2nd it seems to shake the truck... it runs well, i've checked the fluid while the motor was running and the transmission hot... if anything, there is too much fluid ... i love my truck, because of my daughter's finanical situation, it has become my daily driver. i'm hoping it's not about to fall out on me... any help is appreciated

i just fought ahole mess of shifting problems with my c4 it would do something similar to that but with a almost grind sound i would try adjusting the vaccum modulator alittle. Or replace it and do a filter/fluid change thats what fixed ming.

Hi, if your shift is not late, but just too firm, try adjusting the 2nd gear band. It may be loose & winding up on you & coming on with a bang.
There could be other things wrong, but this is easy to check & adjust....Loosen the 3/4 locknut with a wrench & with a 5/16 square socket either 4 or 8 point if you have one, & a inch pounds torque wrench ....tighten the band to 120 " pounds or 10 ft pounds & lock the nut..
If you are lacking the proper torque wrench, you can tighten the square adjusting screw with a 5/16 short open end wrench using only one hand & no gorilla pull, just as if you were tightening a 5/16 nut..........do not over pull it. then back off 1 full turn& lock it down. good luck !
If this doesn't help, write back someone on here will help you..............Donnie
